Coffee appeared in Malawi in 1878 thanks to a Scottish missionary named John Buchnan. He was the first to plant an Arabica coffee tree in the south of Malawi in the Blantyre region, brought here from the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens. In the 30 years since then, Malawi's annual coffee production was approximately 1100 tons.
